There is nothing more essential in the course of our existence than continuing to gain new knowledge and experiences. Unfortunately, many people are led to believe that learning time is exclusively school time: after high school or university we throw ourselves headlong into the world and work life completely forgetting to renew our knowledge periodically.
This is a serious mistake because giving up on acquiring new skills through continual study is equivalent to giving up on improving ourselves. Always remember that the most successful people of our time spend more than two hours a day reading books and improving their skills.
But not everyone has two hours a day to devote to reading and studying. It is also important to remember that it is not easy, especially if you dropped out of school a long time ago, to focus again on turning the pages of a book. In any case, it is important to continue learning throughout your life, or at least to work on this habit: in social sciences it is a process called life-long learning.
It has to do with the ability of our mind to continue to store new information, eliminating occasionally the old and obsolete ones. The ways in which we learn change: for example, a child needs to play in order to learn new things while an adult can easily sit in an armchair and study a manual.
“Lifelong learning is a form of self-initiated education that is focused on personal development. While there is no standardized definition of lifelong learning, it has generally been taken to refer to the learning that occurs outside of a formal educational institute, such as a school, university or corporate training”
Continuing to learn new things will help you keep your mind open and it will expand your knowledge, you will become more inclined to use new technologies and understand scientific theories. Let’s see some types of learning that could positively influence the course of your future life.
Interesting and useful types of learning
The first type of learning that you should put into practice is that related to the professional field you are passionate about: always keep up to date on the news from the field you are best skilled at. In this case it is very easy to find information and it is probably also quite easy for you to fully understand it because these are subjects you deal with on a daily basis and the ones you have studied all your life.
The second type of learning that you should absolutely implement in the course of your life is that related to personal growth and so-called soft skills. In this case it is about learning skills that will allow you to easily overcome numerous difficulties. This category includes problem solving, i.e. the ability to find a creative solution to a problem by applying old cognitive schemes. But this category can also include some character qualities such as empathy or self-esteem.
Finally, the last type of learning that you should consider is that related to a completely new subjects and experiences. Every now and then opening up to the unknown will do you a lot of good and you may even find connections with your profession or personality that you never imagined before.
